MAY 2007

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

It is already May and we have had 5 successful and well attended monthly program meetings in addition to two New Member Receptions prior to our luncheon meetings. All of the meetings were well attended by members and guests with an average of over 50 attendees. For the remainder of the year we have 5 additional meetings on the calendar. Three more monthly program meetings will occur in June, October, and November in addition to two symposia – the Half-Day on July 12 and Full-Day on September 19. We hope that some of our outlying members will be able to travel to one or both of the symposia. Reminder – we will have no meetings in August or December.

We have greatly appreciated the comments of meeting attendees on the Monthly Meeting Surveys, which are reviewed at each Board Meeting. Many of the topics suggested have been or will be covered in our Monthly Meetings or one of the Symposia. Speaking of surveys, we encourage everyone to respond to the Chapter Survey soon to be sent to each of you. Our goal is to serve our diverse membership in the best way possible and add value to your FPA membership investment. Please let us know how you feel on the various issues included in the survey.

Two areas that have been problematic in the past are the reporting of the CFP CE’s and the receipt of meeting announcement emails. In 2007 we are not aware of any problems in these areas. Our Chapter Executive, Kristy Pickurel, has made these areas a focus this year and we thank her for her efforts. Please let us know if you are experiencing any problems.

Please note that opportunities for Sponsorship of the Half-day Symposium are available – please inform any potential sponsors with whom you have business relationships.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the June 14 evening meeting.

John Sleesman
President, FPA of the Triangle

Mind your own business by listening to others. FPA's resources make it easier than ever with links to eight areas of Practice Management information.

SEC TO FOREGO COURT APPEAL ON B-D RULE

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced that it would not seek a rehearing by a federal appellate court in FPA’s lawsuit challenging an SEC rule that exempted fee-based brokerage programs from the Investment Advisers Act of 1940. Nor will the SEC file an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. Instead, the SEC is expected to file a motion with the court by Friday seeking to delay by several months or longer the effective date of the court’s mandate. In reaction to the SEC decision not to appeal, FPA President Nicholas A. Nicolette, CFP®, said, "We are very pleased that the SEC will not appeal the decision. Prolonging a contentious legal debate in the courts would serve no useful public policy purpose nor enhance investor protection."  Read more about FPA's government relations activities in May's Capitol Update (log-in required).

FINANCIAL LITERACY IN NORTH CAROLINA

In February 2007, State Treasurer Richard Moore announced the start of a statewide financial literacy survey to measure North Carolina students’ knowledge of saving, credit, debt and other financial issues. $kill $et, a random stratified survey developed in partnership with the Department of Public Instruction, was administered to seventh graders at 20 schools across the state. The results of the online survey were released in April and provide the most in-depth analysis ever of North Carolina students’ financial literacy.  For the complete results, go to http://www.nctreasurer.com/ and search for $kill $et.

If you are interested in becoming more involved in financial literacy, education, pro bono, and other volunteer activities through FPA of the Triangle, please contact Holly Durham, Community Outreach Director at hollydnc@yahoo.com.
